Surprises expected in Wales squad
October 15, 2002

Wales coach Steve Hansen is expected to name Pontypridd duo Brett Davey and Ceris Sweeney in his squad for the autumn internationals later today.

Hansen will name a 30-man squad to face Romania, Fiji, Canada and New Zealand in what the Kiwi has called a 'mini World Cup'.

Fullback Davey, 30, and fly-half Sweeney, 22 have both recently been called into the national training squad sessions.

Sweeney, the Wales outside-half in the Under-19 World Cup final three years ago, could play a part against Romania with Hansen saying he intended to utilise his squad during those Tests.

Injury to first choice fullback Kevin Morgan, who faces three months out with knee ligament damage, has opened the door for the No.15 shirt.

Commenting on the challenge ahead this autumn, Hansen said, "Wales have not won many games in the past 24 months and we need to build some confidence."

Wales open their autumn campaign against Romania at the Racecourse, Wrexham on Friday November 1.

They then face Fiji on November 9, Canada a week later and Tri-Nations champions New Zealand on November 23, all at the Millennium Stadium.
