U19 Girls': Ontario 15 - USA 8
February 20, 2003

The USA came out strong from the kick off, playing inside Ontario's end for the first ten minutes of the game, but in the end the girls from north of the border proved a little better.

After sustained pressure, a penalty against Ontario at six minutes, gave the USA their first points with a kick made by 17-year-old #14, Sara Edwards, of Littleton, Colo. When asked how it felt to score the first points for the USA, Edwards commented, "It was a total rush! It was nice that the team had confidence in me to put the ball through the posts."

Ontario came back very strong, forcing the USA into their own end. After several thwarted attempts, Ontario finally scored, on a stolen scrum and a blind side attack. The try was converted for a score of 7-3.

Into the first half injury time, the experienced Canadians took advantage of USA missed tackles to score under the posts. The try was unconverted for a score of Ontario 12-USA 3.

Coaching staff members of both the U23 and senior Women's National Teams commented on the USA half-time adjustments, as the young Eagles came out with fresh legs and renewed intensity. 16-year-old flyhalf, Andrea Zeigler of Kent, Wash., moved the USA back into attacking territory with smooth distribution and tactical kicking.

USA's first and only try was scored off a driving line-out inside Ontario's 22. The try was awarded to 18-year-old #8, Sarah Wilson, of Westerville, Ohio at 24 minutes into the second half. The try was uncoverted by #15, Lisa Kaufman. "It was a great experience and an honor playing with these girls. It really did take all 15 to score that try," stated Wilson.

Ontario added a late penalty kick to finish the match on top 15-8.

Next up for USA is the Crystal Cup match against the Wales' U19 National Team on Saturday. "The girls played with great intensity," said head coach Karl Barth. "We've got some detail work between now and Saturday."
