The USA Eagles ended a two-year losing streak with a comprehensive 43-9 victory over Uruguay at at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The hosts started brightly with skipper Todd Clever dotting down after only two minutes and the conversion from Mike Hercus cemented their lead but they failed to hammer home their advantage. Instead they allowed Los Teros back into the match and they edged themselves in front with three penalties from Matias Arocena and they held the lead until the break. Scott Johnson's side raised their game in the second half and eventually ran away with the contest. Hercus put his side back in front with a penalty after ten minutes and some further pressure was soon rewarded with the second try coming from Chris Wyles. Hercus added to his personal tally with the conversion. The impressive Gavin DeBartolo ran in for the third just two minutes later which again Hercus converted to put the Eagles on course for a long-awaited victory. Some good work from prop Mike MacDonald put speedster Takudzwa Ngwenya in for the next score with Hercus capping a sparkling ten minute period with the extras. The victory was complete with further tries from Paul Emerick and Chad Erskine with Hercus finishing with 11 points. The Eagles will now continue their preparations ahead of a tour of Japan that will see the two countries clash in Tokyo on November 16 and then again on November 22.
