Peter Hewat has announced that he will quit London Irish at the end of the current season to join Japanese outfit Suntory.

The Australian fullback has proven a great success since arriving at the Madejski Stadium in 2007 from the Waratahs but explained that he was keen to embrace a new challenge.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my three seasons at London Irish," Hewat said. "It is an exceptional rugby club and I've been lucky enough to have been coached by, and play alongside, some outstanding individuals during my time here. I will always be proud to say that I played for the Exiles.

"The time is right for me to move on. I wouldn't play for any other club in Europe and I've always wanted to play in Japan so the chance to join a leading club like Suntory is a really exciting opportunity for me.

"I'm looking forward to finishing the season on a high and wish London Irish much success in the future. On behalf of my fiancée, Alicia and myself, I would like to thank all concerned with the club, especially the supporters, for making both of us feel so welcome."

London Irish head coach Toby Booth was understandably disappointed by Hewat's decision but was quick the player well.

"We're sorry that Peter and Alicia are leaving, they have made a big contribution to the club both on and off the field and we will miss them," he said. "Peter is a top class professional who has made a big impact at the club both in domestic and European competition. He has been a constant points-scorer and has rarely been unavailable for selection in his time with us.

"We're in the great position of having a talented, new generation of players such as Tom Homer, coming through our Academy and player development system. Peter has been an exemplary role model and it is fitting that his departure creates opportunities for them to continue to grow. He leaves with our thanks and best wishes for the future."
