Former All Blacks lock Ross Filipo has signed a one-year deal with a French rugby club after having come out of retirement this season to play Super Rugby. The 36-year-old returned to the Chiefs as injury cover proving he can still handle the rigours of the professional game.

He was set to play for Waikato in the NPC this season but has instead signed up for the French outfit, whose identity will be revealed next week.

"I'm very grateful to have a second bite of the cherry. To be honest the decision was a pretty easy one in the end with the chance to get a lot more financial stability for my family," he told NZ Newswire.

The versatile forward who won four Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders and Chiefs credits Chiefs coaches Dave Rennie and Tom Coventry for the opportunity after they called him out of retirement to play against the Bulls in May.

"A lot of offers came my way off the back of that one game so I probably owe the coaches a lot of thanks but it just comes back to taking your opportunities."

Filipo played for French club Bayonne for three season from 2009.
