Bennett won the first of his 51 caps in the build-up to the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia, eventually making the cut and playing two games at the tournament. He made his first Test start against Argentina in 2004 but after a replacement appearance against South Africa he disappeared from the international landscape until 2006. He made one replacement appearance at the 2007 Rugby World Cup before starting Wales' 2008 Grand Slam as first-choice hooker. He played four games during their campaign but fell behind Matthew Rees in the pecking order following the tournament.
And Bennett continued to vie with Rees for the first-team berth over the coming season. However, with injuries to Richard Hibbert and Rees ahead of the 2011 World cup, Bennett played a central role in Wales reaching the semi-finals.
However he sustained an Achilles tendon injury against Scotland in the 2012 Six Nations and although he passed a medical to join Lyon after nine season with the Ospreys, he failed to overcome it and was forced to retire a year later without ever having taken to the field for his new club.
