Renowned for his academic and precise approach to coaching, Gold has considerable experience having worked with leading clubs in both the northern and southern hemispheres and at international level.
A two-year spell with English Premiership side London Irish between 2003-05 was followed by a stint with WP Rugby that saw him serve as head coach of Western Province and later as the Stormers' technical director and then assistant coach.
Gold joined Peter de Villiers' South Africa support staff in 2008 as one of two assistants alongside Dick Muir. Gold looked after the Springbok forwards during their series win over the British & Irish Lions in 2009 and also helped orchestrate their Tri-Nations triumph the same year.
He parted company with the Boks following the 2011 Rugby World Cup and would return to the Premiership stage in 2012 at interim director of rugby of the Newcastle Falcons. He was tasked with keeping them in the top flight but despite a significant revival, they still finished at the foot of the table.
Having parted company with the Falcons at the end of the season, he made a swift return to the Premiership as Bath's new director of rugby.
