London Welsh have bolstered their squad ahead of their Aviva Premiership debut with the re-signing of scrum-half Nick Runciman.

The 26-year-old, who joins the Championship winners having been released by Gloucester at the end of last season, made 81 appearances for the Exiles during a previous three-season spell before making the move to the Cherry and Whites last year.

Deemed surplus to requirements at Kingsholm with All Blacks international Jimmy Cowan, Dave Lewis and Dan Robson set to compete for the No.9 shirt, Runciman is relishing linking up with London Welsh again.

"I'm very pleased to be back - it feels like I've never been away," he said. "It's a great place to play rugby, a great bunch of lads and I'm looking forward to playing under Lyn [Jones - head coach].

"I watched all of London Welsh's televised games last season and kept my eye on their results. It was great to see the boys win the Championship the way they did. It was testament to the professionalism of the lads and the coaching staff at the club."

Runciman, a former Worcester and England age-group scrum-half, will help fill the void left by Rob Lewis' departure to Cardiff Blues but will face a challenge for a starting berth from the recently signed Matt Keyte and Sam Egerton. "Gloucester definitely benefited my game," he said. "I feel fitter than I've ever been and my game management's improved, and hopefully I can add that to the London Welsh squad.

"The Aviva Premiership is a massive challenge - there are no easy games. We'll have to treat every game as a cup final, work hard and not switch off at any point during the season."
