Nick Wood has been handed an eight-week suspension by the Rugby Football Union for stamping on Saracens flanker Jacques Burger.

Wood was issued a straight red card for stamping twice on Burger during Saracens' match against Gloucester on Sunday, a moment of madness he apologised to his fellow team-mates for. The incident occurred just 73 seconds into the match and Gloucester were reduced to 14 men for the rest of the game.

And a RFU panel has suspended Wood from September 18 through to November 12. The ban means he will miss the first two matches of Gloucester's Heineken Cup campaign and five Aviva Premiership games, including the West Country derby against Bath on October 25.

Wood will be free to play against Newcastle Falcons in their LV=Cup game on November 16, if selected.
