France internationals Aurelien Rougerie, Julien Pierre and Benjamin Kayser have been hospitalised after they were attacked while returning to their hotel during a Clermont training camp.

The players were set upon by a group of about a dozen men reportedly armed with knives and machetes early on Sunday morning, their club Clermont have confirmed.

The attack, which happened at around 3am on Sunday in the southern town of Millau, left all three players needing hospital treatment for non-life threatening injuries. Rougerie and Kayser are understood to have suffered arm injuries, while Pierre is set to undergo surgery to treat deep cuts to his thigh.

"The whole club is both shocked and outraged by these incidents and is providing all the necessary support to the local authorities, who have opened an investigation into the attack to find and punish the perpetrators," a Clermont statement read.

"In addition to helping the players involved, the club is also contemplating legal proceedings.

"We will provide more information as soon as possible on the health of our players."

Clermont captain Rougerie has 77 caps for France, while Kayser has 24 and Pierre has 27. The Top 14 side reached the semi-final of the Heineken Cup last season but were defeated by Saracens at Twickenham.
