The court case against Gloucester and England wing Lesley Vainikolo has been adjourned to allow the player to return to New Zealand to deal with "sensitive family matters".

Vainikolo, 29, was charged with causing GBH following an incident outside a Bath night club on October 26 2008. He appeared at Bristol Crown Court on Tuesday for a short preliminary hearing, still standing on crutches after undergoing surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon, and his counsel requested that the plea hearing be put back to allow him to travel to New Zealand.

Alex Radley, Vainikolo's counsel, told the court: "My client is taking the opportunity while he is recovering to return to New Zealand and deal with sensitive family matters."

Judge John Foley subsequently moved back the plea hearing until May 8.
