Wales coach Warren Gatland has rejected an approach from Wasps to return to their helm of the Premiership side.

The Wales on Sunday newspaper reports that the current Premiership champions have been rebuffed by their former director of rugby following an audacious bid to prise him from the Welsh Rugby Union.

New Wasps owner Steve Hayes was hoping to reunite Wales' Grand Slam coaching team of Gatland and Shaun Edwards at High Wycombe at the end of the season when it is expected that the out-of-contract Ian McGeechan will step down from the director of rugby role.

Gatland admitted he had considered his Wales future during the autumn campaign because of the row over player release between the WRU and the Welsh regions but the New Zealander has rejected Wasps' approach and pledged his future to Wales.

"I have a contract through to the World Cup and I am really excited about that," said Gatland. "I am excited about this Wales team and its potential.

"The only real frustration I have is that I want the issue between the WRU and the regions to be resolved as soon as possible. It will help the regions and the national side if that happened. There must be a compromise somewhere.

"There is too much negativity there and we need some goodwill. We need a resolution. I fear that personalities have got involved and we have to remember to put rugby first. I just don't want this whole thing to drag us down - the players and the supporters. It is overshadowing some really positive stuff on the field and it is has dragged on too much."

Gatland will announce his Six Nations squad later today ahead of their defence of the Six Nations crown.
