McGeechan heading for Wasps exit?

Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan is set to leave his position at the Guinness Premiership club at the end of the season. McGeechan, who is currently employed also as coach of the British and Irish Lions, is reportedly to take over at London Scottish, who have recently been promoted in to English rugby's third tier.

McGeechan, 62, has enjoyed four years of success at Wasps including Premiership and Heineken Cup triumphs, but his side have endured a disappointing campaign this year, finishing in seventh position in the league and exiting the Heineken Cup at the group stages.

The BBC reports that McGeechan is set to be replaced by New Zealander Tony Hanks, who is currently coaching at Waikato and has enjoyed two consultancy stints with McGeechan at Wasps. Reports maintain that Shaun Edwards, who will join McGeechan on the Lions tour this summer, will keep his role as head coach at Adams Park.

This season McGeechan's salary has been paid in part by the Lions, and The Daily Telegraph has reported that he is unimpressed by the timing of Wasps' intervention. He is set to be handed a consultancy deal with the Premiership champions, although it is suggested that he will decline the offer.

Wasps' owner Steve Hayes has seen his side struggle on-field this season as he re-models the board room, with their Heineken Cup involvement for next season hinging on Bourgoin defeating Northampton in the European Challenge Cup final at the Stoop on May 22.
