England centre Mike Tindall will captain Gloucester for the forthcoming Aviva Premiership season, which begins with a trip to newly-promoted Exeter on September 4.

The World Cup-winner shared the responsibility with Gareth Delve last season but has gone it alone following the Wales No.8's defection to the Melbourne Rebels.

Cherry and Whites boss Bryan Redpath confirmed the change following his side's 24-14 pre-season victory over the Ospreys in Swansea.

Tindall, 31, has endured a number of injury-disrupted seasons but found a good patch of form towards the end of the last campaign, winning back his place in the England midfield in the process.

His presence in Martin Johnson's Elite Player Squad will limit his involvement with the club during the November internationals and Six Nations, but Redpath remains confident that there are other players who will come to the fore during these periods.

"[Tindall] is heavily involved with England but he's desperate and hugely driven to do well for Gloucester," Redpath told BBC Radio Gloucestershire. "He will captain the side throughout the season, supported by Luke Narraway, Rory Lawson and players like that."
