Newcastle Falcons have entered the race to sign Scotland prop Euan Murray following his abrupt departure from Northampton.

The former British & Irish Lions tourist is on the lookout for a new club after his Saints deal was terminated 'by mutual consent' on Friday.

Despite his pedigree the 30-year-old had slipped behind Brian Mujati in the pecking order at Franklin's Gardens, with his refusal to play on Sundays due to his religious beliefs also restricting his playing time.

Falcons boss Alan Tait worked with Murray during his time on the Scotland coaching staff and is keen to explore the possibility of bringing the ex-Glasgow front-rower to Kingston Park.

"We've been in contact," he told The Journal. "He'll have no shortage of offers because he's a top-quality player, but we'd definitely be interested in seeing if a deal could be done.

"I know Euan well from my time at Scotland, and any club would want to have a player like that in their squad. There will be a whole stack of clubs interested though, and there's nothing more to say at this stage other than the fact that we're one of many to have spoken to his agent."

Meanwhile, Newcastle have enlisted the services of former Ospreys and Cardiff Blues scrum-half Jason Spice on a pay-as-you-play deal to cover a rash of recent injuries. The 36-year-old Kiwi recently completed a short-term deal with Leicester, having left Bristol last summer.
