Former England wing Ben Cohen could call time on his career at the end of the season after being told he is surplus to requirements at Sale.

The 32-year-old, a Rugby World Cup-winner in 2003, is considering retirement if he cannot find another club in the Aviva Premiership.

"Sale don't want me anymore because they're trying to spend more money in the pack," he said. "I've got another couple of years left in me so I'll try to get a club in the Premiership. If not, I'll retire. So we'll just have to see what happens."

Cohen, who joined the Sharks from Brive in 2009 on a two-year contract, confirmed that a "couple" of clubs had expressed an interest in signing him.

"I've played more than 50 games in one-and-a-half seasons at Sale. I play week in, week out," he said. "I'm a bit gutted that I'm given the push, but that's life. You just have to take it on the chin."

Steve Diamond's return to Sale as executive director of sport has seen a lift in recruitment prior to next season, with the focus so far on the Sharks' pack. Leeds forward Kearnan Myall signed for the club on Wednesday while Munster prop Tony Buckley and Wasps hooker Joe Ward have also been secured.

Cohen will follow another one-time England star, Mathew Tait, out of the club, with the centre last week released from his contract ahead of a move to Leicester.
