Olly Barkley has confirmed that he suffered a double fracture of his left leg during Bath's Aviva Premiership defeat against Gloucester.

The England international was carried off during the second half of Gloucester's 34-22 triumph wearing an oxygen mask following a lengthy delay while he was treated on the Kingsholm pitch by paramedics.

Writing on the micro-blogging website Twitter, the 29-year-old revealed, "For those that have asked I clean broke my tibia and fibula and had a rod with a few screws put through my tib to secure it. Fib will heal."

Bath later confirmed that Barkley will be out for the rest of the season with director of rugby Ian McGeechan lamenting the loss of the in-form playmaker. "It is obviously very disappointing for Olly to suffer an injury of this nature, especially as he had been playing so well recently, and at such an important part of the season," he said.

"It is doubly disappointing for Olly and the Club as he also missed much of last season with a bad leg injury. We will of course make sure he receives the best possible medical attention to get him back on the field as and when he is ready."

Barkley toured with England in the summer and played for the midweek team but he has not been part of Martin Johnson's plans all year. He signed a new deal with Bath in January.

His injury is a major blow to Bath's Premiership title hopes. They are currently in the play-off zone in fourth place but one of six clubs separated by just four points. Barkley spent a brief and unhappy spell at Gloucester in 2008-09 before returning to Bath.
