Toby Flood looks set to spearhead England's attack against Scotland on Sunday after Charlie Hodgson was released to play for Sale this weekend.

The Leicester fly-half was replaced 50 minutes into England's 17-9 victory over France after suffering an Achilles injury. Flood missed a number of sessions during England's training camp in Oxford last week but his participation in the Calcutta Cup showdown no longer appears in doubt.

Hodgson was among 10 players released by manager Martin Johnson, including Hendre Fourie whose return to Leeds suggests that Leicester flanker Tom Croft will feature in the 22-man squad to face Scotland.

Croft has made three appearances for Leicester since recovering from the fractured shoulder he suffered playing for England against South Africa in the autumn.

Courtney Lawes, who was sidelined for England's first three championship wins with knee ligament damage, has also been retained by Johnson ahead of Friday's team announcement.

England players released for Anglo-Welsh Cup and Aviva Premiership duty this weekend: George Chuter (Leicester Tigers), Phil Dowson (Northampton Saints), Hendre Fourie (Leeds Carnegie), Charlie Hodgson (Sale Sharks), Joe Marler (Harlequins), Tim Payne (London Wasps), Chris Robshaw (Harlequins), Joe Simpson (London Wasps), George Skivington (Leicester Tigers) and David Strettle (Saracens).
