Toulon have confirmed the signing of England flanker Steffon Armitage on a two-year deal from London Irish.

Speaking at a press conference to confirm Burrda as the club's new kit supplier, president Mourad Boudjellal revealed that the 25-year-old will make the switch from the Aviva Premiership to France's Top 14 next season and join fellow England internationals Jonny Wilkinson and Paul Sackey.

Armitage, who appears to have negotiated an early release from his contract with the Exiles, is expected to link up with his new club after the World Cup - joining other high profile recruits including Wallabies playmaker Matt Giteau and Springboks lock Bakkies Bothas.

"He's a very fast player and very powerful, given his size and his weight," said Toulon boss Phillipe Saint-Andre. "He can also play at centre and he speaks French."

Meanwhile, Wilkinson is looking forward to Armitage's imminent arrival, with the fly-half commenting, "He's a very professional player, very good in defence and he's a big threat when he's running with the ball."

Armitage failed to add to his five Test caps during this year's Six Nations but is expected to feature in Martin Johnson's squad for the World Cup. But having committed his playing future to France, his long-term international future is in doubt due to the Rugby Football Union's plan to not select overseas-based players after this year's World Cup.
