Steffon Armitage is to join Top 14 outfit Toulon after being granted an early release from his contract with London Irish.

Toulon announced the signing last month, revealing that the England flanker had signed a two-year deal with the club. However, London Irish boss Toby Booth responded by saying that the move had not been finalised and pointed out that there was still one year left to run on Armitage's contract with the Exiles.

An agreement has now been reached, though, with the club announcing on their official website on Friday night: "London Irish confirmed today that it has agreed to release Steffon Armitage from his contract with immediate effect. The club wishes him all the very best for the future."

The 25-year-old Armitage has been capped five times by his country but his England career is now in jeopardy as the Rugby Football Union (RFU) has made it clear that it does not intend to consider players based overseas for selection for the national side from 2012 on.
