Bath chief executive Nick Blofeld has revealed that the Aviva Premiership club recently fielded an approach from Danny Cipriani over a possible move to The Rec.

The former England fly-half is currently playing his rugby in Australia with the Melbourne Rebels - where he is contracted until 2012 - but a series of disciplinary issues have seen him fall out of favour.

Bath are in the market for a playmaker after Butch James' move back to South Africa with the Johannesburg-based Lions, but Blofeld has admitted that Cipriani is not their preferred option despite a working relationship with the club's director of rugby, Sir Ian McGeechan.

"We have been contacted by Danny Cipriani's representatives but he is not top of our list," he told The Bath Chronicle. "The approach came at the last minute. Obviously Danny is a very talented player but we don't know what has happened in Australia yet and we didn't want to go off-strategy and sign somebody at the last minute.

"But he is someone we have looked at before and somebody we could look at again. Geech already knows him well."

Meanwhile, Sale Sharks hooker Neil Briggs has agreed a one-year contract extension with the club. Briggs, 25, has made more than 100 appearances for Sale since joining them from Rotherham.
