Sale Sharks have signed South African scrum-half Scott Mathie from relegated Leeds Carnegie.

The 28-year-old spent three years with Leeds, scoring seven tries in 90 appearances, after joining the Headingley club from the Natal Sharks in South Africa in 2008. As well as making 42 appearances for the Sharks in the Super 14 competition, Mathie also had a stint with the Blues Bulls in 2005.

The experienced scrum-half is the latest signing for the Sale Sharks as executive director of sport Steve Diamond looks to overhaul the squad following a disappointing season and the loss of key players such as fly-half Charlie Hodgson.

Diamond said: "Scott is another significant signing for us as we build a squad ready for the challenges ahead. I was impressed with his display against us here in March and am sure he will be battling for a place in the team next season."
