London Wasps director of rugby Dai Young bemoaned his side's lack of hunger after they suffered a shock 30-29 defeat by the Newport Gwent Dragons at Adams Park on Saturday night.

The Aviva Premiership outfit outscored their Welsh rivals by four tries to two, with John Hart, Tom Varndell, Ross Filipo and Joe Simpson all touching down. However, the Dragons, whose tries came courtesy of Phil Price and Hallam Amos, clinched victory thanks to the boot of fly-half Steffan Jones, who finished with 20 points to his name, the youngster clinching victory with a last-gasp penalty.

Wasps boss Young was less than impressed with his side's performance, arguing that they had been outfought on the night.

"I didn't think we deserved it. We played a team that didn't have the quality in their side that we've got but they were far hungrier," the former Cardiff Blues boss said.

"Defence is normally one of the strongest points of our performances but it was extremely poor tonight. "We scored four tries and blew one or two more but you have got to defend - and we didn't defend with the same vigour and intensity we have all season.

"We gave away some penalties and the two tries they scored were well taken by them, but poor from us.

"I'm not a very good loser and I'm disappointed. We put a strongish [sic] team out to try and build up a togetherness between us and the supporters here and we let the fans down and ourselves down."

Unsurprisingly, Dragons coach Danny Wilson was thrilled by the result, particularly in light of the fact that the region were without 11 players through a combination of injury and World Cup commitments.

"We held on in there," he said. "We'd talked about controlling possession and after a reasonably good first half, we found ourselves under the cosh a little bit.

"We had 11 boys under the age of 23 in our 23-man squad and Wasps put on a very strong bench that put us under pressure. But the character of our players - young and experienced - was fantastic. To get an away win like this against an English Premiership side is superb."
