Richard Cockerill charged after 'obscene' outburst

Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill has been charged by the RFU following his clash with match officials during the Aviva Premiership final against Northampton Saints.

The charge centres on a confrontation between Cockerill and fourth official, Stuart Terheege, and according to the RFU "was conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game" and during which Cockerill allegedly "used obscene, inappropriate and/or unprofessional language and behaviour".

Cockerill was infuriated by what he believed was a late tackle by Courtney Lawes on Toby Flood. Lawes was penalised but not shown any card while Flood was later substituted with concussion.

Cockerill left his seat in the stands and remonstrated with Terheege at the side of the pitch, an act which Northampton assistant coach Dorian West told ESPN was an attempt to "intimidate" the match officials.

If found guilty he faces a hefty punishment as he has previously been in trouble in similar circumstances . In 2009 he was suspended for four weeks and fined £2,000 after pleading guilty to two offences of abusing match officials, and earlier this season he was warned by the RFU over his conduct relating to match officials in two other incidents.
