Leicester Tigers captain Ed Slater will return to action this weekend after undergoing surgery on a knee injury in September.

Slater picked up the injury playing for England in a tour match against the Crusaders in Christchurch last June and had been expected to miss the entire campaign, but will return to the squad for Saturday's Aviva Premiership clash with Wasps.

"Ed's been working hard and the medical side's been very good with him," Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill told BBC Radio Leicester.

"We said we'd bring him back when he was ready. Ed thought it would be a couple of months ago, I thought it would be the season finished. But he's trained really well the last two weeks and he's back in the mix and he'll be involved at the weekend."

Slater has yet to make an appearance for England in a full international but captained them in the fixture against Crusaders and will hope to stake a late claim for inclusion in the World Cup squad later this year.

Wasps lock Joe Launchbury will make his return from a long-term injury lay-off in the same fixture.
