Harlequins' Joe Marler has had his ban for striking an opponent reduced from three weeks to two following a Rugby Football Union (RFU) appeal hearing.

The 21-year-old prop had been handed his initial suspension after being found guilty of striking a London Irish player during the Aviva Premiership clash between the two sides on the opening day of the season.

However, Marler chose to appeal the decision and his case was heard by Independent Judicial Officer Gareth Rees QC at Twickenham on Wednesday, leading to a reduction that means he will be available to play again on September 27.

Consequently, while Marler will still miss his club's trip to Sixways this weekend to take on Worcester, he will now be eligible for selection for the October 1 meeting with Sale Sharks at The Stoop.
