Shaun Edwards has admitted that his future is still up in the air but that he is likely to part company with London Wasps.

The former rugby league star has spent the best part of the last two months at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in his role as Wales' part-time defence coach. However, his deal with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) expired after Friday night's third-place play-off defeat by Australia and he has now indicated that his time at Wasps is also drawing to a close.

"It is not really the right time to be talking about my future," Edwards said. "It looks as if I am going to be a free agent when I get back to England, unconnected at both club and international level."

When asked if to confirm that he would be leaving his position as Wasps' head coach, Edwards, who only signed a new deal with the club earlier this year, said: "Potentially, maybe in the future.

"I will make a statement when it all comes out properly but the club is in financial difficulties and maybe it is time for me to go on to bigger challenges. I like to coach rugby teams and it has been a pleasure to be involved with Wales but my future is up in the air, there is no doubt about that. I would have an open mind to anything."

There have been several calls for Edwards to be brought into the England set-up and the 45-year-old Lancastrian is reportedly interested keen on the idea. However, much will hinge on the outcome of the inquests into the nation's disappointing World Cup showing and whether Martin Johnson holds on to his position of team manager.
