London Irish's Steven Shingler has been hit with a four-week ban.

The suspension is a result of his dangerous tackle on Cardiff Blues centre Dafydd Hewitt in the club's Heineken Cup match on November 18. Independent judicial officer Roger Morris determined that the tackle was at the mid-range entry point of six weeks, but initially added two weeks to the ban as "a deterrent against this pattern of offending" within the game.

However, after taking into account the player's guilty plea and clear record, the ban was reduced to four weeks from the date of the match and Shingler will be free to play on Monday, December 19. Both the player and ERC have the right to appeal the decision.

And Connacht flanker Mike McCarthy was handed a two-week ban for his dangerous tackle on Toulouse wing Vincent Clerc in the Irish side's 36-10 defeat in Galway. McCarthy pleased guilty to the charge and his offence was found to be at the low end of the level of seriousness, with an entry point suspension of two weeks.

A week was added to the recommended ban after considering McCarthy's disciplinary record, but was then removed due to his guilty plea and good conduct at the hearing. An ERC statement added: "McCarthy will be available to play on Thursday, December 8 2011." McCarthy and ERC have the right to appeal the decision.
