Newcastle Falcons have announced that scrum-half Peter Stringer has arrived at the club until the end of the season.

Stringer has been turning out for Aviva Premiership champions Saracens in recent times - after moving there on loan from Munster - but he has swapped the top of the table for the basement-dwellers and will help the Falcons for the rest of the season. With just five games left, the Falcons lie eight points off 11th placed Wasps and Stringer is expected to be thrust straight into the team in their scrap for survival.

"I have been lucky enough to play for two great teams in the shape of Saracens and Munster in the last few years and I have enjoyed a lot of success," Stringer said. "Hopefully that experience will help me here at Newcastle. I have spoken to Gary on the phone and I have heard great things about him and his attitude towards the game.

"The directors and coaches at Saracens had nothing but good things to say about Newcastle and I am looking forward to working with Gary [Gold]."

The Falcons' next match is against Worcester on March 23 and Newcastle boss Gary Gold has praised Stringer upon his arrival. "I am delighted that a player of Peter's quality and experience has decided to play his rugby in the North East," Gold said. "I am humbled by the fact that he has joined us and it just goes to show the type of individual that Peter is.

"The signing of Peter further underlines the club's ambitions."

And in relation to the club's ambitions, reports in the press on Tuesday suggest that former Quins boss Dean Richards will be unveiled as the side's new coach for next season - something that ESPNscrum reported on February 26.
