Scotland international Scott MacLeod has returned to British rugby by signing for Newcastle Falcons for the 2012-13 season.

MacLeod has spent the past year in Japan where he played for Kobe Steelers. Previously he played for Border Reivers, Scarlets and Edinburgh.

The Falcons are currently in limbo after they finished bottom of the Premiership, but they have to wait and see whether London Welsh can fulfil the Premiership's promotion criteria in the event that they win the Championship promotion play-off.

Despite the confusion surrounding which division Newcastle will play in next season, the second row had no fears about joining Dean Richards at Kingston Park.

"Newcastle Falcons are a club with great potential and I am really looking forward joining up with my new teammates," MacLeod said. "I am good mates with Ally Hogg and he has told me how good the team spirit is at the club, and it can only go from strength to strength under the management of Dean Richards."

The Hawick-born MacLeod has won 23 caps for Scotland since his debut in 2004 and he played in the 2007 Rugby World Cup. His most recent appearance was against Wales in the 2011 Six Nations.
