Leicester Tigers boss Richard Cockerill has confirmed the re-signing of Matt Cornwell from Italian side Mogliano.

Cornwell spent four years at the Tigers between 2004 and 2008 before moving to the Exeter Chiefs and then Northampton. He spent last season in Italy with Super 10 side Mogliano but the versatile back - who can play at fly-half, fullback and inside centre - has attracted the eye of boss Cockerill who has opted to bring him back to Welford Road.

The Tigers are yet to confirm any signings for next season but they are widely believed to have secured the signatures of Dan Bowden, Miles Benjamin and Adam Thompstone. "We have got Toby Flood and George Ford - and Dan Bowden can play at fly-half and centre," Cockerill told the Leicester Mercury. "But we normally have four fly-halves with the fourth one being a young lad coming through the academy.

"Unfortunately, our academy lad has just started in a grand final! The problem we may have is that Flood and Ford could both be away with England. Flood is a certainty and Ford has a good chance too.

"Matt has been playing at fly-half in Italy and has been doing well. He will come here as our fourth-choice fly-half who can also play in the centres and full-back. But what is also important about Matt is that he knows the club and is a really good bloke.

"When you sign a bloke who potentially is not going to play in the first team every week, they need to know where they stand in the environment. Matt is not someone who will be sulking around if he is not playing.

"He will train as hard as anyone and, when we ask him to play, he will do a good job."
