Peter Russell is reportedly the latest figure to join a new-look Newcastle Falcons coaching set-up under recently-appointed director of rugby Dean Richards.

The Journal reports that the former Hawkes Bay coach is finalising contractual and work permit details to take over as head coach at the club. He is likely to work alongside forwards' coach John Wells, who is set to sign a contract extension.

As a player Russell was either a fly-half or centre for Wellington before he turned his hand to coaching and became well regarded for his attacking philosophy. He guided Hawkes Bay to three ITM Cup semi-finals and was also assistant coach for the Highlanders in Super Rugby and the New Zealand under-20 side.

His imminent arrival continues the Falcons' rebuilding ahead of next season. Even though they could be playing in the Championship they recently signed internationals Rory Lawson, Scott MacLeod and Carlo Del Fava.
