Sale Sharks have dismissed reports that director of rugby Bryan Redpath has been sacked.

The Sharks are on a woeful run of form in the Aviva Premiership with no wins from their seven matches to date and lie at the foot of the table with just two points to their name. This form is a far cry from the pre-season hype which saw Sale labelled as a contender for a play-off spot following the big name signings of Richie Gray and Danny Cipriani.

With former Lions coach John Mitchell teed up to join Sale's backroom staff, it seems likely that he will take on a more dominant role than his original billing as a 'consultant'. And Mitchell has previously hinted that there will be a coaching re-shuffle at Sale.

"Teams can only have one leader," Mitchell said. "We'll determine that when the time is right. The team certainly won't have two leaders. There's always got to be one leader. It's about getting a clear message across.

"I'd like to think that I'm a strong character, but when you are like that you are either seen as a freedom fighter or as a terrorist. You've got to have uniqueness as a coach. I make no excuses for my leadership. I am not employed to be a manager, I'm employed to be a leader."

Despite Sale putting on record last night "that Bryan Redpath has NOT been dismissed by the club," his future seems shrouded in uncertainty with the Telegraph reporting on Tuesday that he has been removed from his position as director of rugby.
