Wasps scrum-half Joe Simpson is facing a month on the sidelines after injuring his leg against London Welsh on Sunday.

Simpson's leg was injured after it was trapped under a pile of players and he was forced off at half-time in Wasps' match at Adams Park at the weekend. There were original fears that the scrum-half had torn his anterior cruciate ligament but boss Dai Young has put to bed that original prognosis.

"We did fear the worse, but he's had a scan and there's no tear, so it's really good news," Young told the Bucks Free Press. "He's still going to be out for three to four weeks so it is a significant injury, but nothing that needs operating on at this time. It's not fantastic news, but it's better than it could have been."

Simpson looks set to miss two of Wasps' Aviva Premiership matches - against Saracens and Leicester Tigers - and their two opening Anglo-Welsh Cup matches versus the Cardiff Blues and the Worcester Warriors. Young admits that although it is a blow losing the England scrum-half, the injury comes at a time when Simpson could have been rested anyway.

Young said: "There's never a good time to be injured, but it will have less impact on our Premiership campaign over this period than it would have a little bit later in the season."
