Profile

England flanker Michael Lipman was born in London and raised in Australia, representing the New South Wales Waratahs at youth and 'B' levels before agreeing a switch to play for Bristol in the Premiership.

After a successful introduction to English rugby he moved to Bristol's West Country rivals Bath in 2003. His form at the club led to a call up for England's 2004 summer tour, and he made his international debut in a loss to New Zealand in Auckland.

Injuries curtailed his progress at international level and while he won a cap against Australia in 2006 it was not until 2008 that he secured a run in England colours, winning seven caps through the Six Nations and autumn internationals.

In 2008-09 his season was heavily disrupted by a concussion sustained against Toulouse in the Heineken Cup.

Late in the season he was charged by the RFU with 'conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game' following a club night out. He, along with fellow players Justin Harrison, Alex Crockett and Andrew Higgins, refused to take drugs tests and were found guilty of misconduct by the RFU.

He terminated his contract with Bath and was subsequently banned for nine months. An unsuccessful appeal followed in September 2009 and as a result he was sidelined until February 28, 2010.

Upon the expiration of the ban, Lipman agreed to join Super Rugby's newest franchise, the Melbourne Rebels. However, the deal was blocked by the Australian Rugby Union. Lipman then linked up with Sydney club Warringah before the ARU eventually gave him the green light to sign for the Rebels.

He featured for the Rebels in their first Super Rugby campaign in 2011 but midway through his second season with the franchise he was forced to announce his retirement from the game due to a succession of concussions.
