Profile

English referee Andrew Small was recently promoted to the IRB's elite panel and will take charge of South Africa's second Test against Italy.

After injury ended his schoolboy career, Small began refereeing in New Zealand in 1993 where he lived until 2002. On his return to England, he continued rising in stature and was named on the national panel of refs in 2003 and the elite panel in 2004. He took charge of the u-19 Rugby World Cup in 2004 and 2005, before making his Premiership debut in 2006 as Newcastle took on Leeds.

He refereed at that season's Churchill Cup, with Ireland A facing the New Zealand Maori and USA playing Canada. Having operated as a Television Match Official at previous internationals, Small will now get his chance to take charge of a full Test.
