Newcastle have announced the signing of centre Ryan Shortland from Otago. The 29-year-old midfielder began his career in rugby league with Melbourne Storm and the New Zealand Warriors, crossing codes in 2008. He graduated to the Otago NPC side in 2009 and will now head north to bolster the Falcons following a spell in New South Wales. "He has been scoring tries for the Waratahs 'A' team, and he has recently been training with their first team," Falcons director of rugby Alan Tait said. "He is also English-qualified, which is great. He runs hard, he is strong and is a great signing for the club." © ESPN Sports Media Ltd.
