Exeter Chiefs have announced the recruitment of scrum-half Will Chudley from their Aviva Premiership rivals the Newcastle Falcons.

Chudley has previously turned out for the Bedford Blues in the Championship and joined the Falcons last summer. He has had the likes of Jordi Pasqualin, Chris Pilgrim and Peter Stringer for competition there but still turned out seven times for the Falcons in the Premiership.

But Chudley will now travel south and join the Chiefs who are preparing for life in the Heineken Cup next term. And life will not get any easier for Chudley with Rob Baxter's side already boasting Haydn Thomas, Kevin Barrett and Junior Poluleuligaga in their scrum-half ranks, something Baxter is keen to emphasise.

"For Will it's up to him to fight and try and push into that match-day squad," Baxter said. "We've not brought him here to sit on the bench and not play any rugby. He's aware he's got to come in and fight for his place like any other person.

"It's a short contract for him, but we know he's coming here to fight for something longer term. That makes it exciting for him and it makes it exciting for us as well."

Chudley is not the only player to be leaving the Falcons at the end of the season. Second-row Andrew Van der Heijden will depart from Kingston Park to return back to New Zealand after signing a one-year deal with Auckland, according to the Newcastle Journal.
