Premiership Rugby chief Mark McCafferty has backed the J.P. Morgan Premiership Rugby Sevens Series to go from strength to strength after London Irish claimed this year's title in the most dramatic fashion on Friday night.

The Exiles staged a staggering second half comeback to claim a 33-28 victory over Gloucester in the tournament finale in front of a sell-out crowd at The Rec in Bath.

A wealth of international talent was on display throughout the competition, with England centre Jonathan Joseph instrumental in Irish's win, scoring three tries on the night, including two in the final. And McCafferty admitted it was all the more impressive with the finals coinciding with the middle Friday of the Olympics.

"Once you set a competition up and once you get it going in a high performance environment like the Premiership Rugby clubs, people want to win it and when people can see the quality of the tournament nobody wants to come second," he said. "There have been some great matches in the final and I think it takes a little bit of focus off the Olympics as well.

"J.P. Morgan came in at the start they made all of this possible. In three years it's grown into a phenomenally successful 7s tournament. It takes a while for these things to build and in the first year we really went from a standing start in about March when we said 'OK let's do it', through to the summer and it was a pretty quick lift-off.

"But since then we have had a couple of years to build it and I think that's led to the quality we have seen this year and the exposure it's got. All of which J.P. Morgan have been a very big part of making that happen."
