Sale chief executive Steve Diamond expects to be able to confirm the appointment of coach John Mitchell "in the next 48 to 72 hours".

Speaking in the wake of the Sharks' Anglo-Welsh Cup victory over Saracens on Friday night, Diamond revealed that Mitchell was in the process of negotiating his exit from the Johannesburg-based Lions.

Mitchell was suspended by the Golden Lions Rugby Union earlier this year following allegations of misconduct but having recently been cleared of those charges, the New Zealander then announced his intention to re-join the South African side and reportedly resumed work this week.

However, it appears the Mitchell, who served as a consultant with the Sharks earlier this season and has also been confirmed as a member of the club's 'rugby strategy management board', will soon be unveiled at the Salford City Stadium.

"John's negotiating his way out in South Africa and he's set to join us in the next 48 to 72 hours," said Diamond.
