Ireland and British & Irish Lions winger Tommy Bowe is out for four to six weeks after undergoing surgery on Wednesday.

The Ulster winger broke his wrist while playing for the Lions against the Reds and looked set to miss the rest of the series. But against all odds, Bowe returned for the second Test against the Wallabies and played a key role in the Lions' series-clinching triumph the week later.

But he has been forced to undergo further surgery on his wrist and will miss the start of the season. However, he will hope to be back in time to play in Ulster's first two matches of the Heineken Cup with their campaign starting against Leicester Tigers on October 11.
