Northampton Saints ran seven tries past Bedford Blues as they kick-started their pre-season campaign with a 45-21 victory at Goldington Road on Friday .
The Saints did not have new British & Irish Lion recruits George North and Alex Corbisiero but they had plenty of quality in their ranks. And despite Bedford's Mark Atkinson bagging a first-half hat-trick, they made light work of the Blues as they racked up the tries.
Samoa's Kahn Fotuali'i made his debut for the Saints and he helped put GJ van Velze over for a try in the first 40. The Saints' other tries came thanks to efforts from Ben Nutley, Jamie Elliott, Ben Foden, Gareth Denman, Tom Collins and a penalty try.
Elsewhere on Friday evening, Harlequins dispatched neighbours London Scottish 40-15 at the Twickenham Stoop.
Quins included new signing Paul Sackey in their line-up with England's Danny Care handed the No.9 shirt. Darryl Marfo got the first try for Quins with Tom Williams crossing soon after. Luke Wallace went over just before the break and with three conversions from three for Ben Botica, Quins had a commanding 21-3 lead at half-time. Scottish scored the first try of the second 40 but Tom Guest soon struck back for the hosts. Williams and Miles Montella then exchanged tries but it was Quins who got the final say with Jack Clifford scoring.
And London Irish were also in action as they beat Nottingham 44-10 at Meadow Lane. Andrew Fenby was the Exiles' hero as he bagged an incredible four tries with Irish crossing for six in total. Irish's other scores came from Gerard Ellis and Scott Moore while Matthew Jarvis bagged one for the hosts.
