Richie McCaw has been ruled out of the Crusaders' crunch local derby with the ladder-leading Hurricanes despite showing improvement from a bout of concussion.

McCaw was briefly knocked out in the Crusaders' victory over the Blues in Christchurch at the weekend, the veteran flanker leaving the field in the 64th minute of the 29-15 win.

McCaw was declared a non-starter by Crusaders doctors on Tuesday after he failed to start the concussion protocols a day earlier. The 34-year-old was said to be suffering a minor headache on Monday but felt fine later that evening. However with his first contact session only set down for Friday the call was made to sideline the All Blacks skipper for the trip to Wellington.

Matt Todd looms as his obvious replacement this weekend.
