Wasps centre Chris Bell has been forced to retire with immediate effect because of a shoulder injury. The 32-year-old former Leeds and Sale three-quarter, who led Wasps during the 2013-14 season, made 183 Premiership appearances in a career spanning 14 years.

Bell signed a new contract prior to the start of the season and was vice-captain for a side that uprooted to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry midway through the year.

Bell told the club's website that despite his frustration, he had been fortunate to have a lengthy career for numerous teams. "I am immensely disappointed that I have had to retire due to injury, however I am grateful to have had the experience of professional rugby. I have made some great friends, played alongside and against some amazing players and played at some incredible stadiums."

Wasps' director of rugby Dai Young was quick to praise Bell for his efforts for the team. "From a personal perspective, I would like to thank Chris for everything he has done in support of Wasps, the squad and the coaching team," he said.

"Since I've been at Wasps, Chris has played a massive part in helping me move the club forward, through his performances on the field and his commitment to help raise standards off it."

Bell has is currently unsure about the direction he will now pursue. "At this stage I'm not sure what the future holds. While it's slightly daunting and a change to professional sport, I look forward to the new challenge ahead," Bell said.
