Brown to face jaw surgery

Gloucester lock Alex Brown will undergo surgery today to stabilise a hairline fracture in his jaw, sustained during his side's 30-25 defeat against Harlequins on Saturday.

After consultation with a specialist on Monday, Brown will have a plate inserted into the left side of his jaw and is expected to be out of action for three or four weeks.

Brown had only been back in the Gloucester side for two matches following a fractured arm, picked up against the Ospreys in January.

The 28-year-old, who has 2 England caps, has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season.

"Alex is an integral part of our squad and at such a critical stage of the season it is a significant blow not to have a player of his calibre about," said Gloucester's head coach Dean Ryan.

"But we have operated without his influence before this season and he showed when he recovered from his fractured arm that is able to return very quickly and we naturally hope this injury is the same.

"We took advice before deciding on the course of action and believe this is the best for everyone involved."
