London Irish want six new signings
January 31, 2014
A day after they saw one of their brightest talents leave for pastures new, London Irish boss Brian Smith has announced they are after six new recruits ahead of next season.
Last season the Exiles saw the likes of Matt Garvey, Jonathan Joseph and Anthony Watson leave and on Thursday, England winger Marland Yarde announced he has signed for Harlequins ahead of next season.
Irish have recently had fresh investment in the club and Smith wants six new signings ahead of next season.
"We have targets which we are pursuing. Some are nearly done and we are in hot pursuit of others. There are probably half a dozen still to come into the group," Smith told getreading. "We are definitely looking to put more steel into the pack. We have to have more strength and depth there, while we have an embarrassment of riches behind the scrum.
"You always want another try scorer or ball-playing centre, but we need to channel resources into making sure we can win the battles up front. In some matches this season it has not mattered who was wearing 9 to 15 as the game has been decided up front.
"At times we have struggled to have the depth we would have liked up front. We are working hard to rectify that."
