Ryan: Relegation had to happen

Worcester's relegation from the Aviva Premiership is part of a rebuilding project that "had to happen" for the good of the club, according to director of rugby Dean Ryan.

The Warriors were relegated after a 44-20 defeat by the league leaders at Allianz Park on Saturday, but Ryan has vowed to use the time in the Championship to "grow a proper rugby club" after the disappointment of the current campaign.

Explaining the rebuilding project a Sixways, Ryan said: "This club has not gone about its business in the right way for a long, long time. What happened to this club had to happen.

"I'm incredibly proud of the 20 or 25 people who have been working hard for the past two or three months. It's clear the improvements they've made and how they feel about the club. The people coming in are going to add to that.

"We're going to try and grow a proper rugby club, one that puts resources in the right area and trusts its academy. We're in the Championship and that's going to drive us on, because that's going to hurt."

"There's some big players in that changing room, that it's going to hurt. It will hurt egos, it will test humility and everything else."
