Saracens lock Hayden Smith is being targeted by Queensland Reds as they look to rebuild after a wretched Super Rugby campaign.

Smith, 29, is best-known for his achievements across a number of sports which includes a spell as a tight end at the New York Jets. He returned to rugby - he had played for the USA at the 2011 Rugby World Cup - after being dumped by the Jets last summer.

Smith is known to Reds coach Richard Graham who was at Saracens with the player was first signed by them in 2008.

"Hayden is one of the players we will be considering when we make that decision over the next few months," Graham said. "The level of professionalism he conducted himself with was matched by his strong desire to succeed.

"I am not surprised by what he has achieved in rugby, nor that he managed to beat thousands of other seasoned NFL players to secure a contract with the New York Jets.''

Smith has only made one Premiership start for Saracens since re-signing for them in December as well as one appearance off the bench.
