Ian Gough guilty of assault on former Miss Wales

Wales international Ian Gough has been found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, former Miss Wales Sophia Cahill, shortly after she became engaged to singer-turned-DJ Dane Bowers.

A Croydon magistrates court was told Gough pushed Cahill into the passenger door of his camper van outside her home in London, aggravating injuries she had from a car accident.

Cahill said that Gough arrived late for a meeting and she went out to his van to speak with him. She stood in the rain as he finished texting and went round to the passenger side to get in. "Ian just stormed around the front of the van," she said. "He had the front of my shoulder and he just flung me back." She went inside and called the police ten minutes later.

Bowers said that Gough "grabbed Sophie and moved her away from the car. It was forceful enough that I wondered ... I couldn't hear what was said. But in my eyes he had no reason or permission to grab her and move her out of the way."

Cahill told the court she had suffered whiplash requiring hospital treatment in a car accident and that Gough's attack made her injuries worse.

Gough, who denied the charges, said he told Cahill not to open the passenger door in case it exacerbated the whiplash injury. His defence also accused Cahill of being "abusive and swearing" at Gough, which she denied.

Gough, who has 64 Wales caps and is set for a return to Newport Gwent Dragons, will be sentenced on August 24.
