Wallabies legend George Smith is on the verge of signing for Wasps, according to reports in the French press.

RMC Sport says the openside is close to signing for the Aviva Premiership side after activating a clause in his Lyon contract. Lyon will play their rugby in PROD2 next term and Smith's two-year deal had an opt out clause if they got relegated at the end of his first season there.

The reports state Smith has activated the clause and is set to join Dai Young's Wasps. The move will see him bring 111 caps worth of experience to the Ricoh Arena and is a huge statement of intent from the Coventry side. Smith is regarded as one of the world's finest opensides and he will vie with James Haskell and Sam Jones for a spot in their back-row.

Smith has played his domestic rugby in Australia - with the Brumbies - in Japan with Suntory Sungoliath and in France with Toulon, Stade Francais and Lyon.
